The novel is the 1st in a series of 7 novels as well as 2 short story collections. For this series, Cheyney switched influences borrowing the understated prose style of Dashiell Hammett and the slightly tipsy humor of Cleve F. Adams. The novel is a fine example of the `Callaghan` series. In 1952 it was adapted for the stage by Gerald Verner as `Meet Mr. Callaghan` and ran for 340 performances at the Garrick Theatre in London`s West End. Adams. [Reginald Evelyn Peter Southouse-Cheyney (1896-1951) was a British police reporter, crime investigator and crime fiction writer who flourished between 1936 and 1951. His literary specialty was ersatz hard-boiled `American`-style thrillers aimed primarily at British and European audiences, although by the mid-1940`s he had acquired a considerable following in America as well. Many of his short stories and novels were adapted into films. Cheyney`s most original, and most critically acclaimed, work was his so-called `Dark` series of espionage novels, concerning a top secret British counter-intelligence unit operating against Nazi agents in war-time England and abroad. This novels seem to have foreshadowed much of the Cold War fiction of the mid to late 1960s. Anthony Boucher placed these later works in the context of Graham Greene and Joseph Conrad].

The main reason for his homecoming is to get back what he had in his youth, primarily, his old girlfriend, whose father had run him out of town years before. In 1962, the play was made by Richard Brooks into a feature film starring Paul Newman, Geraldine Page, Shirley Knight, Madeleine Sherwood, Ed Begley, Rip Torn and Mildred Dunnock. `The Rose Tattoo` is a 3-act play (1949, 1950, revised 1951). The play tells the story of an Italian-American widow in Mississippi who has withdrawn from the world after her husband`s death and expects her daughter to do the same. A film adaptation starring Anna Magnani was released in 1955. `The Night of the Iguana` is a stage play (1961), based on his short story (1948). The play is set in an isolated Mexican hotel in 1940, where a group of very different people are brought together by chance. They include a tough hotel proprietor, a defrocked clergyman, a middle-aged spinster who is weary of travelling the world with her poet grandfather, and a family of jubilant Nazis. It was adapted into the Oscar-winning film directed by John Huston and starring Richard Burton, Ava Gardner, and Deborah Kerr (1964).
